A cancer diagnosis is tough for any pet parent. New advances in targeted therapies and radiation oncology for pets mean there is more hope for a positive outcome. Here is a list of some of the latest and greatest advances in the fight against cancer in pets:

Stereotactic Radiation

Stereotactic radiation (SRS/SRT) is a highly advanced form of radiation therapy with more precision than ever before. Using computer technology to target the exact location of cancer cells, SRS/SRT can send a high dose of radiation to one specific area. This means the radiation is not affecting areas with healthy tissue. This enables oncology teams to specifically target cancer cells with an effective dose of radiation without causing much damage to surrounding, healthy tissue. Treatments can typically be delivered in just a few sessions (sometimes just in one). This therapy provides a higher quality of life for pets with cancer. It also offers improved treatment odds for many types of tumors, including those in the brain, nasal passage, lungs, and bones.

Immunotherapy

This revolutionary tool in the fight against cancer utilizes a pet’s own immune system to combat diseased cells. Doctors will use a combination of cancer vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, and other immunotherapies, such as cytokines, to boost the immune system and fight the cancer. While still in development and undergoing clinical trials, immunotherapy holds considerable promise for the future of treating cancer in pets. Currently, immunotherapy appears to be most effective when used in conjunction with other therapies, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Each cancer patient is unique, meaning that specific therapies may be more effective for some patients than others. Consult with your veterinary oncologist to determine if immunotherapy is a suitable option for your pet.

Precision Chemotherapy Planning

Precision chemotherapy planning enables oncologists to create a personalized chemotherapy plan tailored to each patient. It’s a multistep process that includes:

  • Molecular Profiling: Oncologists will thoroughly study tumor imaging and biopsies to gain as much information as possible about the cancer. Once they have a clear picture of what they’re working with, they determine the best course of attack that will do the least amount of damage to healthy tissue.
  • Targeted Therapies: Using the information, the oncology team will attempt a series of targeted therapies tailored to the patient’s specific genetic makeup and tumor size and location.
  • AI Tools: Precision chemotherapy also relies on AI tools that aid in data analysis to develop the most effective treatment plans. These tools can potentially help pets enjoy longer periods of remission and improved quality of life.
