Outdoor Activities for Dogs Beyond the Daily Walk
As the weather continues to improve and we all start to feel the summer breeze, most of us want to spend more time outside (including our pups). Although your go-to might be to strap on her leash and take her out for a stroll, there are many more ways to enjoy the great outdoors together. Here are ideas for outdoor activities for dogs beyond the daily walk.

Check Out the Dog Park
Dog parks have plenty of opportunities for fun for both you and your pup. Some parks have obstacle courses and other activities that the dogs can enjoy. Even if your local park does not have these attractions, the camaraderie of group play offers your dog socialization and enrichment opportunities. You should not go to the dog park if your pup does not do well around other animals. If your dog behaves well when other dogs are near, this could be a great outdoor activity to add to your summer list.
Play a Game
Whether your dog goes crazy for fetch or needs more mentally-stimulating games like hide-and-seek or scent games, moving your playtime outside is a great way to mix it up. If you are planning playtime somewhere other than your own backyard, be sure to pack a water bowl and plenty of water for your pup. Don’t spend too much time outside if the temperature is too high, and try to stick to grassy areas to avoid overheating your dog’s paws.
Go For a Swim or Cool Off
Swimming and summer go together like baseball and hot dogs. Why not include your dog in your next swimming adventure? Spend time teaching your pet to swim and invest in a quality life vest to create a safe swimming environment. Never leave your pet unsupervised while in the water. If you live near a splash pad, these can be a great way for your pet to cool off. Or even set up some refreshing water toys in the backyard. Be sure to thoroughly rinse off his coat and paws once you’re done.
Try Hiking or Camping Together
Your canine companion is the perfect partner for your next hiking or camping adventure. These give you the opportunity to explore a new area, spend some time in nature, and make lasting memories together. They also give your dog lots of new smells to enjoy. Keep your dog on a leash to avoid her chasing after any wildlife.
Have a Picnic
If you don’t have the time (or energy) for a full camping trip, you can take your dog for a picnic to still enjoy the outdoors. Pack up a dog-friendly meal and something for you to eat, and get yourselves set up for a lovely day in nature.
Create an Obstacle Course
If your dog needs a lot of physical and mental stimulation, you can build an obstacle course in your backyard to keep them active and entertained. Use a variety of materials to build a fun (and safe) course for your dog to show you what he can do. You could even try an agility class at a pet services location.
Regardless of what you choose, expand yours and your pup’s horizons and get out to enjoy outdoor activities for dogs beyond the daily walk.
