Designing a Stylish, Pet-Friendly Home
As pet owners, we have different considerations for what we keep in our homes than our animal-free counterparts do. Designing a pet-friendly home makes our spaces safer for our furry roommates and more comfortable for cohabitation. Just because a space is pet-friendly, though, does not mean it needs to have a boring and unoriginal style. Here are some tips on designing a stylish, pet-friendly home:

Choose Materials that Are Easy to Clean and Maintain
Between shedding fur, slobber, and messy eating habits, our pets can definitely leave a (dirty) mark on our homes. If you are very particular about cleanliness in your space, you should opt for materials that are easy to clean. Also, consider color when choosing flooring materials and fabrics that will help hide your pet’s fur. Choose:
- Flooring materials like vinyl, hardwood, or porcelain tile can be cleaned quickly and are resistant to certain stains. Carpets soak up stains and can be smelly.
- Semi-gloss or satin paint finishes for the walls are easier to wipe down than other options, like matte paint. Or choose a matte paint that is made to be easy to clean.
- Pet-proof fabrics like microfiber on furniture are very hard to stain and resist dirt. You can also choose pet-friendly slipcovers that you can remove and throw in the wash. Leather is also a good option, depending on your pet.
- Glass table tops can be challenging to keep clean from nose and paw prints.
- Rugs that are easily washable are a massive boon for pet owners.
- Window coverings are the ones that prevent your pet from climbing or damaging them.
There are plenty of pet-friendly decor materials that will uphold your aesthetic and make it easier to keep your space clean and safe for your pets. In addition to using these pet-friendly materials, you should also vacuum, mop, and sweep regularly to get rid of stray hair and debris. Pet-friendly materials make it much easier (and faster) to maintain a clean home even with your dirty, hairy roommates. Ideally, keep your pet’s nails trimmed to prevent tears and scratches.
Invest in Stylish Storage Options
We love our pets, and sometimes we like to show them this love by showering them with gifts. If your house is overrun with pet toys and accessories, it’s time for an upgrade. Invest in stylish storage options that add to your decor and cleverly hide all these pet accessories. There are options in a variety of sizes and styles, which makes it easy to find pieces that enhance your interior design. Or build in storage solutions. You can also find dishes, beds, and litter boxes that look like decorative accessories.
Bring the Outside In... Carefully
Plants add natural beauty to a home design, and the right kind can add visual stimulation to a pet’s daily life. Your pet will probably enjoy having a bit of the outdoors inside.
You have to be sure, though, that your plants are safe for pets. Unfortunately, there are a lot of plants that are toxic to animals. Some of the most dangerous include:
- Lilies
- Sago palm
- Tulips
- Amaryllis
- Oleander
- Aloe
- English ivy

Special Features
If you’re building or remodeling a home, consider adding special features such as a dog washing station or a built-in kennel or feeding station. If you have a large dog, design the washing station on the ground since lifting your pet would be challenging.
Add a space particularly for your pet, such as an under-stairs retreat. Choose stylish furniture that also serves as a dog kennel or bed that can be displayed in a room. Build in storage that can hold large bags of food, grooming tools, and toys. Or a small fridge for refrigerated food.
Add a window where your cat can sit and see the world, or connect a catio that your cat can access when they want. Lastly, consider access--do you need an exterior or interior access door? Do you sleep with the bedroom door closed, but want your cat to be able to access the litter box as needed? Build these special features in from the start.
Hide Wires and Other Pet Dangers
Loose wires, cleaning supplies, and even garbage cans pose dangers to your pets…and they also create eyesores in your home. Finding creative ways to hide these items will enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home and reduce the risks for the pets living in your space.
As you think about designing a stylish, pet-friendly home, consider your pet’s lifestyle as well as yours, and factor that into the design or your purchases.
