The early history of pets is when they started to domesticate cats in large numbers about 12,000 years ago in the Middle East. People living there recognized that cats were extremely talented at killing rats and other vermin that people don’t want in their homes. The Felis Sylvestris, also known as the wildcat, was the first kind of cat to be officially domesticated for these purposes.

It’s a little less clear when exactly humans domesticated dogs, but it happened anywhere from 12,000-15,000 years ago in Asia and Europe (and potentially other parts of the world as well). It might be hard to believe when looking at your pampered Chihuahua, but all modern day dogs are descendents of the grey wolf.

The History of Pets Through the Ages

As animals started living with humans, their personalities gradually became calmer and more affectionate toward their new two-legged roommates. Their lives became intertwined in ways they never were before. It only took a few hundred years after the initial domestication for bonds to grow so strong that humans started burying their pets like family. They often used a grave marker and performed a kind of funeral for pets when they died. Some humans even requested to be buried with their beloved pet companions. In fact, researchers recently discovered a 9,500 year-old grave in Cyprus that contained human and feline remains resting eternally together. This chapter in the history of pets shows how early humans saw animals not just as helpers but as companions.

The History of Pets: Filling in the Lines

While there is still so much that is unknown about exactly when domesticated animals became a literal part of a family, it is clear that humans and animals developed strong bonds quickly. Researchers are continuously looking to find more information about when pets became integral parts of households around the world.

The Evolution of Pets as Family Members

One thing is clear: modern-day pets are family members. They sleep in our bedrooms, have their own health insurance policies, and add so much love and joy to our lives. Thankfully, our ancestors decided to bring these animals inside their homes thousands of years ago, so we can enjoy the blessings of pets in our lives. The history of pets reminds us that our bond with animals is constantly evolving — and at OVRS, we’re honored to support that bond today.

At Oakland Veterinary Referral Services, pets are our lives.
