We accomplish this by preemptively preventing pain, as well as utilizing multimodal techniques, which means we attack the pain from all angles.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Oakland Veterinary Referral Services has several means of preventing and reducing pain in your pets, and we often use them in combination with one another. Some of these include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Drugs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We utilize many different types of drugs before, during, and after painful episodes. Two common types of medications used are non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (similar to ibuprofen for humans) and opioids (morphine and its relatives). We administer these drugs orally, by injection, by infusion, sometimes even in the form of a patch on the skin. Drugs are a powerful option that we have to provide relief for painful pets.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Supplements<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nutritional supplements and herbal therapies can have a place in helping to minimize pain as well.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Acupuncture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Acupuncture utilizes tiny needles to stimulate strategic points in the body to relieve pain, among other benefits.
