This is one of the most important commands you can teach your dog. In most cases, it is fairly easy to teach your dog reliable recall so that they come when you call.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your friends at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/\">Oakland Veterinary Referral Services<\/a> offer tips for how to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/crate-training\/\"> train your dog<\/a> to come when called. We want to turn that <em>no show Fido <\/em>into a reliable recall Rover!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Tools to Train Your Dog to Come When Called<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you begin, you will need to gather a few helpful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/organize-your-dog-supplies\/\">training supplies<\/a>. These are essential if you want to use positive rewards training, which is highly effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A pouch for small training treats and whatever treats your dog loves<\/li><li>A plastic clicker (which will help reinforce the reward based training)<\/li><li>A long leash or a few leashes to be linked together<\/li><li>A whistle (optional)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recall Words to Use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may think that \u201ccome\u201d would be an effective word to get your dog to come to you. And it is, unless it has a bad association. The words you choose during commands training must be intrinsically linked to a reward. If you use the word \u201ccome\u201d and your dog isn\u2019t ready to leave a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/adventures-in-dog-park-manners\/\">favorite park<\/a> or is expected to do something they don&#8217;t like, like get a post-walk bath, then the word is not going to work out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of a word that has similar meaning, such as \u201chere,\u201d \u201cto me,\u201d or \u201clet\u2019s go.\u201d Make sure when you use your command that you reward generously to reinforce the training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To Begin Your Training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dogs naturally want to come to you because they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/human-animal-bond-pets-enhances-lives\/\">social creatures<\/a>. They already do when you have something they like, such as food or a toy. Use this to your advantage when you train them to come when called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Attach a long lead to your pet\u2019s collar and let them explore.<\/li><li>Show your dog a treat, toy, or something that will entice them to come to you.<\/li><li>Say your chosen command.<\/li><li>When they are next to you, exclaim \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cgood\u201d and use your clicker while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/dog-treats-2\/\">giving your pet a treat.<\/a><\/li><li>You can use any combination of rewards to entice your pet and gain their cooperation.<\/li><li>Repeat this process over and over, both on and off leash, until they come to you when you only use the command.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Apply these simple steps in everyday situations. These include calling your pet for their meal, getting them ready to leave for a road trip, teaching them to walk off-leash, and playing games like fetch.
