At one time, the family mouser lived in the barn or yard. They had to scruff around for their meals and avoid the usual scrapes that come with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/outdoor-cats\/\">living outside<\/a>. From encounters with wildlife to poisonous plants, they may have lived for 3 or 4 years if lucky. Now with advanced veterinary medicine, better nutrition and a safer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/cats-knock-everything-over\/\">lifestyle for our whiskered pals<\/a>, the lifespan of a cat has increased considerably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are still many variables in determining how long a cat will live. The average lifespan of an indoor\/outdoor cat is somewhere in between that. That\u2019s a big gap, right?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Factors that account for this wide lifespan range are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Indoor only or allowed out<\/li><li>External environment<\/li><li>Congenital defects<\/li><li>Breed<\/li><li>Genetics<\/li><li>Nutrition<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/prevent-pet-poisoning\/\">Exposure to toxins<\/a><\/li><li>Veterinary care<\/li><li>Underlying medical conditions<\/li><li>Vaccinations<\/li><li>Parasite protection<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your cat\u2019s life expectancy depends strongly on lifestyle and preventative care. We cannot overstress the importance of living indoors paired with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/holistic-pet-care\/\">wellness visits<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/therapeutic-diets-for-pets\/\">nutrition<\/a> for giving your cat the best possible life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips for Helping Your Cat Live a Long Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to increase your cat\u2019s life expectancy, there are things you can do as a loving cat owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Keep your cat\u2019s annual wellness checkup. Your veterinarian can detect possible issues early and treat them before they become more serious.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Keep them on a healthy, balanced diet at the right portion for their size.<\/li><li>Avoid too many treats and people food, as these can pack on unnecessary pounds and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/pet-pancreatitis\/\">lead to pancreatitis<\/a> and other health problems. A good weight is a must for cats to have a good chance at growing old gracefully.<\/li><li>Exercise and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/indoor-pet-enrichment\/\">enrichment<\/a> play a role in overall health and general well-being.<\/li><li>Spay or neuter your cat, as this can extend their life and control the homeless pet population.<\/li><li>Take care of your pet\u2019s teeth.
