Let\u2019s look at how you can avoid a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/pet-emergencies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pet emergency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this holiday and keep the happy in Happy Holidays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Festive Feasting<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A severely upset stomach\/intestines is the number one reason for pet emergencies during the holidays! There is so much more food around, especially rich food! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few of the common toxic treats include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolate, including baker\u2019s chocolate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(chocolate poisoning is a very common holiday dog emergency)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hazelnuts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapes and raisins<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything sweetened with Xylitol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bones<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garlic and onion<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help prevent an emergency, keep food buffets and snacks on tables that are too high or inaccessible for pets, and ask guests not to sneak food to small beggars (ahem). For gatherings, make sure your pet has a place to go out of the way during food prep, mealtime, and clean-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/pet-pancreatitis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pancreatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another unfortunate food-related pet emergency during the holidays. Avoid giving your pet most people food, especially rich or fatty food. It\u2019s better to choose small quantities of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/pumpkin-pet-treats\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like steamed green beans or mashed sweet potato.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unwelcome Pet Guests <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as you may be annoyed with, or fight with, a family member or guest, your dog or cat may feel the same way about pet guests in your home. Wounds or bites from fights are one of the top holiday pet emergencies we see. If possible, have family board their pets (or don\u2019t bring your pet if you\u2019re the one traveling). Or, use separate rooms, crates, or gates to keep pets separated to avoid fights over territory, food or affection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, with more people in the house, there are more opportunities for small accidents and injuries like stepping on, or tripping over, a pet. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trimming the Tree and Decking the Halls<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the beloved activities of the season is decorating. Whether that\u2019s putting up the tree early or simply adding some baubles and sparkles to the mantel, decking the halls is a great way to get into the spirit. Unfortunately, some of those decorations can be dangerous to pets if they ingest them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid the following items this season, or manage keeping them out of your furry one\u2019s reach:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinsel and curly ribbon<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potpourri<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lit candles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edible ornaments or scented ornaments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holly berries and mistletoe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christmas tree preservative (in water)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gifts that contain food that can be toxic (coffee, chocolate, candy)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stringed lights (bundle or hang them out of reach)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be mindful that any small ornament or decor can be ingested and become a choking hazard or foreign object lodged in your pet\u2019s digestive tract. If your pet is prone to gobbling anything new or climbing the tree, locate your decor in a separate room that\u2019s off limits to fur friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding Pet Emergencies and Missing Pet Scares<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another issue around the holidays is the holiday hustle. This time of year is a whirlwind and can create a lot of stress for you. This also creates stress for your pet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pets can get out of the home when one too many guests come through. Fireworks and loud parties can also cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/canine-noise-aversion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noise anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and therefore an increased risk of an escape. Through all of the parties and commotion, ensure that there is a quiet space for your pet to relax, and don\u2019t forget to pay attention to them despite the chaos.
