Because we understand and respect that many of our readers and clients believe differently, we would like to offer our advice for keeping those footloose outdoor kitties as safe and comfortable as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Risks Of Outdoor Life<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statistics show that indoor cats lead longer, healthier lives than their outdoor counterparts. Indoor cats live 10-15 years on average, whereas outdoor cats live an average of 2-5 years. Some of the risks faced by outdoor cats include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being hit by a car<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Becoming injured by another cat, dog, or wildlife predator<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contracting an infectious disease from another cat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poisoning by antifreeze, rodent bait, or other toxin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contracting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/pet-parasite-prevention-101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parasites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Becoming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/lost-and-found-using-social-media-to-find-a-missing-pet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or trapped<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theft, injury, or death from people with cruel intentions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Protecting Outdoor Cats In The Summer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have more than our fair share of extreme weather here in Michigan. Keep these tips in mind for making life more comfortable for your outdoor kitty this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/summer-pet-emergencies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leave plenty of fresh water outside at all times. Place ice cubes in the water to cool it and encourage your cat to drink more.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If kitty has an outdoor bed, be sure it is placed in a cool, shaded area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On hot days, wipe a damp towel over your cat to keep her cool.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brush kitty every day to allow air to move freely through his or her fur and remove dust, mats and debris. This is especially important for longhaired cats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If possible, bring your cat indoors during the hottest part of warm days, usually 11:00AM to 4:00PM.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep an eye on your cat during the warmest days, and bring him or her to your veterinarian if you observe any of the signs of overheating or heat stroke (excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, dilated pupils).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Other Ways To Mitigate Risks<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your cat is current on all vaccinations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Administer a monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventive to your cat, year round.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring your cat to your veterinarian for all regularly scheduled wellness visits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your cat indoors overnight if possible. If they stay outside, make sure they have a safe place to retreat to in case of danger.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have your cat microchipped, and make sure the chip is registered and updated any time you move or change your phone number.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your cat is wearing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petco.com\/shop\/en\/petcostore\/product\/good2go-turquoise-breakaway-cat-collars\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breakaway collar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with current ID tags at all times.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have your cat neutered or spayed. Not only will you be preventing your cat from reproducing, neutering and spaying can help with certain undesirable behaviors such as roaming, fighting, and spraying.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our tips are aimed at helping you keep your animal companions safe and with you for as long as possible.
