Veterinary cancer patient emergencies do happen, though, and any pet owner who is caring for one needs to be aware of the signs of a truly urgent problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Special Needs of the Cancer Patient<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/specialty-services\/oncology.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oncology department<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services understands that having a pet going through cancer treatment is not easy on either of you. We are very educated in the special needs of these delicate patients. Pets undergoing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/waging-a-war-on-pet-cancer-information-on-treatment-options\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancer treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have:<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different nutritional needs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A weakened immune system<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication-related side effects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disease related side effects<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know how important it is to monitor and manage all of these things closely. Certain symptoms, while worrisome, may simply be an expected result of your pet\u2019s treatment. For other symptoms, it is important for you to communicate any concerns to us so that we can address problems right away. Please let us know if your pet:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is not eating well<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiences vomiting and\/or diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has coughing or trouble breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is acting lethargic or depressed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiences any bleeding, sores, or discharges<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is having trouble walking or seems disoriented<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has a seizure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is running a fever (&gt;102.5 F rectally)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appears dehydrated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will not\/can\u2019t take medications as prescribed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good communication between us and yourself is paramount to helping identify emergencies and ensure the best possible treatment outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A small percentage of pets will experience a problem in the first few days after a cancer treatment such as chemotherapy, just as human chemotherapy patients do. However, many more have issues as a result of the disease itself. Digestive issues, anemia, or metabolic problems are just as likely to be the source of veterinary cancer patient emergencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think your furry cancer patient may be having an emergency, please let us know right away.
