Intelligent. Stately. Loyal. Dedicated. Just a few of the many adjectives one could use to describe U.S. military dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vietnam veteran and former military dog handler Joseph J. White felt the same way, which is why he founded National K9 Veterans\u2019 Day (March 13<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a day intended to honor all military and working <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/1515-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for their service and their sacrifices for our nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Military Dogs Throughout The Ages<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first recorded use of dogs in battle was around 600 B.C.. Canines went on to be used by the Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Romans, and ancient Far East cultures during wars and battles. Here in the U.S., the employment of military dogs began during the Civil War, where dogs served as messenger senders and guards for prisoners.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking a cue from European armies\u2019 use of military dogs during World War I, the United States began training military dogs for deployment during World War II, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. To help the war effort, many U.S. citizens donated these first military K9s, also known as \u2018Dogs For Defense\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Kennel Club, along with a few select breeders, trained the first \u2018Dogs For Defense\u2019 K9s in 1942. Over the years, the military, along with police and rescue organizations, have developed their own training methods for their K9s. Each method is tailored specifically to the job required, and both dog and handler are extensively trained to fulfill their duties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides bomb searching, security work, aiding soldiers in battle, and the countless other positions filled by military K9s, there is also plenty of work for service dogs in the \u201ccivilian\u201d world. Dogs work side by side with human handlers as police K9s, Customs K9s, Border Patrol K9s, F.B.I K9s, Secret Service K9s, Airport Police K9s, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Celebrating K9 Veterans<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As battle has evolved over the years, so have the jobs that battle\/military dogs have been trained to do. Regardless of job or breed, the common thread connecting these remarkable dogs throughout history is their unwavering devotion to their handlers and their invaluable skills that have saved countless human lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can honor the United States military K9 veterans by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visiting the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mwdm.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michigan War Dog Memorial<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/blog\/the-gift-that-keeps-on-giving-pet-friendly-donations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or volunteering to one of the many K9 related charities, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wardogsmakingithome.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">War Dogs Making It Home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uswardogs.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. War Dog Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/petsforpatriots.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pets For Patriots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking a moment this K9 Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or anytime, to think about, honor, and salute these dogs who have so selflessly served our country since World War II.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovrs.com\/about-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oakland Veterinary Referral Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to all U.S. military and service dogs (and their trainers and handlers)!
